Xylon: Enabling High-Performance ADAS with Maxim Integrated's GMSL High-Speed Serial Links
Headquartered in Zagreb, Croatia and founded in 1995, Xylon is a leading provider of intellectual property (IP) in the areas of embedded graphics, video and image processing, and networking. The company’s mission is to enable its customers to develop high-performance designs with lower production costs through its optimized IP cores for Xilinx FPGAs. Called logicBRICKS, Xylon’s IP cores help customers stay ahead of their competitors by allowing for configuration via a GUI and the implementation of targeted SoCs without hand coding.

Xylon’s product portfolio includes automotive solutions such as development boards and automotive video data loggers that customers use to create autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) applications. For prototyping and proof-of-concept activities, designers need a high-speed serial link to connect cameras as well as radar and LiDAR sensors to development boards. The company’s logiRECORDER Automotive Video Data Logger provides raw multi-channel video and network data recording and analysis, as well as playback of logged data in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. Here, a high-speed serial link is also needed to connect the data loggers to a vehicle’s various network data busses and also to connect them between vehicle cameras and the electronic control unit (ECU) for data recording.
For its solutions, Xylon needed high-speed serial link technology that would provide fast, high-bandwidth in-vehicle video, audio, and communication data stream transfers, without latency or issues caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Solution and Benefits
To meet its high-speed serial link requirements, Xylon began what is now a long-standing relationship with Maxim Integrated. Xylon finds Maxim Integrated's Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link (GMSL) technology to be ideal for its automotive solutions. “A single cable delivers data reliably over long distances,” noted Gordan Galic, the company’s technical marketing director. “That’s why we’ve been an early adopter of Maxim Integrated's GMSL technologies.”
GMSL technology delivers high bandwidth and data integrity, while meeting the automotive industry’s stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. One of Xylon’s 6-channel FPGA mezzanine cards (FMC) uses the MAX96706 14-bit, 1.6Gbps deserializer and pairs with the MAX96705 16-bit, 1.6Gbps serializer. Customers can connect up to 12 cameras via the MAX96706 to a Xilinx board for prototyping ADAS and autonomous driving applications. Another of the company’s products that uses next-generation GMSL technology for its data interface is a 62.3MP HDR automotive video camera. Available in a 1-cubic-inch, waterproof housing, the camera provides 30fps of high dynamic range color video. GMSL technology supports video transfers through tiny coaxial cables. Its ACAP Multi-Camera Vision Kit for Xilinx Versal Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (ACAP) devices includes a video input FMC add-on card that uses next-generation GMSL technology.
According to Galic, Xylon considers Maxim Integrated’s GMSL technology to be ahead of other solutions on the market. For example, even in larger vehicles such as trucks, GMSL technology supports the data transfer distances required for advanced applications such as surround view systems. He added, “Working with Maxim, we get early samples and access to great technical support. We have open communication channels for exchanging technical documents, and we think the technology is great.”
