Obsolescence Mitigation (OM) Program

Maxim Integrated's Obsolescence Mitigation (OM) Program ensures a future supply of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts utilized in specific long-term programs.

Military prime contractors are now designing with COTS parts to reduce the cost of finished assemblies. COTS parts can have a relatively short lifetime, 10 to 12 years or less, compared to military programs which may span 30 years or more.  This product and program lifetime mismatch can result in obsolescence issues for long-lived programs causing the prime contractor to face either a costly redesign or the need to maintain a special inventory of the obsolete part to ensure supply over the lifetime of the program.

Maxim's OM Program provides a long-term supply solution for customers needing a long term supply of Maxim plastic parts.

Program Operation

  1. Maxim posts obsolescence notices with DSCC and with GIDEP; Avnet and Maxim also notify customers who have purchased a given part within the past two years.
  2. When the customer discovers that a Maxim part on their BOM is being made obsolete, they must contact Maxim's representative or the Mil/Aero group to enroll in the OM Program.
  3. Once enrolled, Maxim works with the customer to set up a reserve wafer-bank specifically for the program.
  4. Future orders are then placed against his reserve.

Benefits

  • Provides an assured supply of COTS parts for long-term programs.
  • Future-built parts will have the then-current date codes.
    • LTB parts all have the same date code.
    • OM Program parts built in the future have future date codes.

Product Scope

  • Virtually ANY Maxim lead-free part is eligible.
  • Applies to non-military and military parts.
    Note: Does not apply to hermetic parts. There may be a rare instance where a device may not be manufacturable in the future.

Procedure

  1. The customer defines the remaining length of the program in years and the number of parts needed for the projected remaining life of the program.
  2. Mil/Aero group calculates the number of wafers needed to support this requirement.
  3. The customer places order for first-year demand.
    • First-year demand is defined as the total life demand divided by the number of program years.
    • Maxim builds the first-year demand.
    • Maxim sets aside the reserve wafers plus extra to allow for a possible program extension, or an increase in annual demand.
      Note: parts are set aside after the first order.
  4. Reserve wafers are held for a single customer; No one else, even from the same firm, may have access.
  5. The customer may place an order for any quantity in years two through n regardless of the first year's quantity.
    • The customer is not required to buy any parts after the initial, first year purchase.
    • Minimum order quantity (MOQ) for any given buy is 500 pieces.
    • If the customer's program is canceled by their end customer, Maxim closes out storage and scraps the wafers at no extra charge to the customer.
