Hot-swap integrated circuits prevent system failures by managing the inrush current during live insertion of line cards. These ICs also limit current during the normal operation of high-availability systems. Maxim's solutions are optimized for networking, servers, and storage and telecom systems.

To enable proactive maintenance and diagnostics, selected hot-swap products improve system reliability by integrating current, voltage, and fault monitoring over an I²C interface. Other solutions integrate a power MOSFET and current sense to simplify designs and reduce the total bill of materials (BOM) cost.

MAX15068 Dual ORing, Single Hot-Swap Controller with Accurate Current Monitoring

MAX15068 Dual ORing, Single Hot-Swap Controller with Accurate Current Monitoring

The MAX15068 offers ORing function and hot-swap features for two input-supply-rail applications requiring the safe insertion and removal of circuit line cards from a live backplane. The device integrates dual ORing MOSFET controllers, a single hot-swap controller, electronic circuitbreaker protection, and power monitoring in a single package. The device operates on 2.9V to 18V supply voltages.

The device regulates the forward voltage drop across the ORing MOSFETs to ensure smooth current transfer from one supply to the other without oscillation. The ORing MOSFET turns on quickly to reduce the load voltage drop during supply switchover. If the input supply fails or is shorted, a fast turn-off minimizes reverse-current transients.

The device implements a foldback current limit during hotswap startup in order to control inrush current, thereby keeping the hot-swap MOSFET under safe operating area (SOA). After the hot-swap startup cycle is completed, onchip comparators provide active current-limit protection against short-circuit and overcurrent faults. The load is disconnected from the input quickly in the event of a fault condition.

The device provides a current-sense amplifier output. A voltage proportional to the current delivered to the system can be read directly at the IPMON pin.

The device is factory-calibrated to deliver accurate overcurrent protection with ±5% accuracy. During an overcurrent-fault condition, the device enters an autoretry mode. The device features an adjustable slew-rate control during startup. Additional features include power-good and fault-indicator outputs.

The MAX15068 is available in a 20-pin, (4mm x 5mm) TQFN package and is specified from a -40°C to +125°C operating temperature range.

MAX5995BEVKIT Evaluation Kit for the MAX5995A, MAX5995B, MAX5995C, MAX5974D

The MAX5995 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled and tested surface-mount circuit board featuring an Ethernet port, network powered-device (PD) interface controller circuit for -57V supply rail systems. The EV kit uses the MAX5995B IEEE® 802.3af/at/bt-compliant network PD interface controller in a 16-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad. The IC is used in Power-over- Ethernet (PoE) applications requiring DC power from an Ethernet network port for PDs such as VoIP phones, wireless access nodes, security cameras, lighting, and building automation.

The EV kit receives power from IEEE 802.3af/at/btcompliant power-sourcing equipment (PSE). Refer to the MAX5952, MAX5965A/MAX5965B, and MAX5980 IC data sheets for PSE controllers. The PSE provides the required -36V to -57V DC power over an unshielded twisted-pair Ethernet network cable to the EV kit’s RJ45 magnetic jack. The EV kit features a 1 x 1 Gigabit RJ45 magnetic jack and two active full-wave rectifiers (N101 and N102) for separating the DC power provided by an endspan or midspan Ethernet system.

The EV kit can also be powered by a wall adapter power source. The EV kit provides PCB pads to accept the output of a wall adapter power source. When a wall adapter power source is detected, it always takes precedence over the PSE source and allows the wall adapter to power the EV kit.

The EV kit demonstrates the full functionality of the IC, such as PD detection signature, PD classification signature, Multi-Event Classification (MEC), Intelligent MPS, inrush current control, input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and DC-DC step-down converter. The step-down converter operates at a fixed 290kHz switching frequency and is configured for an isolated active-clamped forward topology with output voltage +12V DC that can deliver 5.5A of current.

MAX5977A 1V to 16V, Single-Channel, Hot-Swap Controllers with Precision Current-Sensing Output

MAX5977A 1V to 16V, Single-Channel, Hot-Swap Controllers with Precision Current-Sensing Output

The MAX5977A/MAX5977B hot-swap controllers provide complete protection for systems with a 1V to 16V single-supply voltage.

During the initial insertion, the hot-swap controllers limit the inrush current from damaging the board or from shorting out the backplane. When the input voltage is above the undervoltage threshold and below the overvoltage threshold, a 5µA current source powered from the internal 5V charge pump drives the gate of an external n-channel MOSFET providing a slow turn-on response. An internal current-sense amplifier in the IC monitors the current across an external shunt resistor providing current sensing for wide input-sense voltage range. The devices provide two levels of overcurrent circuit-breaker protections: a fast-trip threshold for a fast turn-off and a lower slow-trip threshold for a delayed turn-off.

Exceeding either of the overcurrent circuit-breaker thresholds will force the device into fault mode where the external n-channel MOSFET is disabled. The MAX5977 is available in two versions which provide a latched off (MAX5977A) or autoretry (MAX5977B) output when the device is in fault mode.

A calibration mode allows further calibration of the integrated transconductance amplifier for production testing of the final design. The devices are offered in a 20-pin, 4mm x 4mm, TQFN-EP package and are fully specified from -40°C to +85°C.

The MAX5924/MAX5925/MAX5926 1V to 13.2V hot-swap controllers allow the safe insertion and removal of circuit cards into live backplanes. These devices hot swap supplies ranging from 1V to 13.2V provided that the device supply voltage, VCC, is at or above 2.25V and the hot-swapped supply, VS, does not exceed VCC.

The MAX5924/MAX5925/MAX5926 hot-swap controllers limit the inrush current to the load and provide a circuit-breaker function for overcurrent protection. In the event of a fault condition, the load is disconnected.

The devises include many integrated features that reduce component count and design time, including configurable turn-on voltage, slew rate, and circuit-breaker threshold. An on-board charge pump provides the gate drive for a low-cost, external n-channel MOSFET.

The MAX5924/MAX5925/MAX5926 are available with open-drain PGOOD and/or active-low PGOOD outputs. The MAX5925/MAX5926 also feature a circuit breaker with temperature-compensated RDS(ON) sensing. The MAX5926 features a selectable 0ppm/°C or 3300ppm/°C temperature coefficient. The MAX5924 temperature coefficient is 0ppm/°C and the MAX5925 temperature coefficient is 3300ppm/°C. Autoretry and latched fault-management configurations are available (see the Selector Guide in the full data sheet).
