23VIN 3.2AOUT USB-C Buck-Boost Charger with Integrated FETs for 2S Li-Ion Batteries

Industry's Smallest Buck-Boost Charger with Wide Input Range for USB Type-C/Power Delivery Applications

Product Details

The MAX77962 is a high-performance wide-input 3.2A buck-boost charger with a Smart Power Selector™ and operates as a reverse buck without an additional inductor, allowing the IC to power USB On-the-Go (OTG) accessories. The device integrates low-loss power switches, and provides small solution size, high-efficiency, low heat, and fast battery charging. The reverse buck has true-load disconnect and is protected by an adjustable output cur- rent limit. The device is highly flexible and programmable through I2C configuration or autonomously through resistor configuration.

The battery charger includes a Smart Power Selector to accommodate a wide range of battery sizes and system loads. The Smart Power Selector allows the system to start up gracefully when an input source is available even when the battery is deeply discharged (dead battery) or missing. For battery safety/authentication reasons, the IC can be configured to keep charging disabled, and allow the DC-DC to switch and regulate the SYS voltage. The system processor can later enable charging using the appropriate I2C commands. Alternatively, the IC can be con- figured to automatically start charging.

Description

The MAX77958 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled and tested printed circuit board (PCB) that demonstrates the MAX77958 Standalone USB Type-C and Power Delivery Controller.

The EV kit enables easy evaluation of the following features:

  • USB Type-C Detection/PD Communication (See Table 1 for Acronyms)
    • Power Role (Sink and Source), Data Role (UFP and DFP) detection
    • PD Adapter Detection and PD Communication
    • Integrated VCONN Switch with OCP
    • Power/Data Role Swap
    • PPS (with PD Adapter Supporting PPS)
    • Audio and Debug Accessory Sink/Source Mode
    • Vendor Defined Message
  • BC1.2 Legacy Charger Detection: SDP, CDP, DCP and DCD Timeout
  • I2C Master to Control Companion IC.
  • 9 Configurable GPIOs

The EV kit contains a MAX77962 charger to demonstrate the I2C master feature of the MAX77958. The MAX77962 is a buck-boost charger for 2S Li+ battery application and is capable of 3.5V to 23V input voltage, with a maximum programmable fast charging current of 3.2A.

The MAX16904 a buck converter is installed on the EV kit to provide 5V to VCONN pin. The MAX77958 uses GPIO2 to enable the buck converter when the MAX77958 is in SOURCE Power Role.

A Micro-B USB cable is included in the package to serve as the interface from a USB port on a Windows® PC to the slave I2C port on the MAX77958. A Windows based software provides a user-friendly interface to exercise the features of the MAX77958.
