Product Details

The MAX77958 is a robust solution for USB Type-C CC detection and power delivery (PD) protocol implementation. It detects connected accessories or devices by using Type-C CC detection and USB PD messaging. The IC protects against overvoltage and overcurrent, and detects moisture and prevents corrosion on the USB Type-C connector. The IC also has a D+/D- USB switch and BC1.2 detection to support legacy USB standards. It contains VCONN switches for USB PD and an enable pin for an external VCONN boost or buck converter. When the USB PD negotiation is complete, the IC configures an alternate mode setting for external multiplexers.

The IC is compliant with USB Type-C Specification Release 1.3 and PD 3.0. It can be customized easily without affecting the compliance.

The IC has an I2C master that can read and write to other devices in the system so that its firmware can configure related devices without the main processor's assistance. For example, it can configure an external charger based on BC1.2 detection, CC detection, and PD communication.

The IC has an interrupt output pin to report event detection and status changes. It also has an I2C interface that the system can use to read/write and configure internal registers.

The IC has nine configurable GPIOs that can be used for detection, as interrupts, and as the enable/disable pin for external devices, or as ADC inputs.

The IC is available in a 3.10mm x 2.65mm, 0.5mm pitch, wafer-level package (WLP).

    Description

    The MAX77958 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled and tested printed circuit board (PCB) that demonstrates the MAX77958 Standalone USB Type-C and Power Delivery Controller.

    The EV kit enables easy evaluation of the following features:

    • USB Type-C Detection/PD Communication (See Table 1 for Acronyms)
      • Power Role (Sink and Source), Data Role (UFP and DFP) detection
      • PD Adapter Detection and PD Communication
      • Integrated VCONN Switch with OCP
      • Power/Data Role Swap
      • PPS (with PD Adapter Supporting PPS)

    The EV kit contains a MAX77962 charger to demonstrate the I2C master feature of the MAX77958. The MAX77962 is a buck-boost charger for 2S Li+ battery application and is capable of 3.5V to 23V input voltage, with a maximum programmable fast charging current of 3.2A.

    The MAX16904 a buck converter is installed on the EV kit to provide 5V to VCONN pin. The MAX77958 uses GPIO2 to enable the buck converter when the MAX77958 is in SOURCE Power Role.

    A Micro-B USB cable is included in the package to serve as the interface from a USB port on a Windows® PC to the slave I2C port on the MAX77958. A Windows based software provides a user-friendly interface to exercise the features of the MAX77958.

      The MAX77975/MAX77976 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled and tested printed circuit board (PCB) that demonstrates the MAX77975/MAX77976 single-cell lithium-ion battery charger.

      The MAX77975/MAX77976 is for 1S Li+ battery applications and can operate with a 3.8V to 19V input voltage with a maximum charging current of 3.5/5.5A. The MAX77975/MAX77976 offers a reverse boost as well as fully integrated low power loss switches to provide small solution size and high efficiency. The EV kit demonstrates the performance of the MAX77975/MAX77976 charger and provides the convenience of evaluating full USB Type-C® PD solutions with the MAX77958 USB Type-C PD controller. This combination allows fast charging of the battery through the USB Type-C port as well as reverse powering the USB Type-C port with battery OTG mode.
