Real-time clock (RTC) ICs must keep time, even when the main power of the device is off. Since RTCs often draw energy from an auxiliary battery or supercapacitor power source, management of power consumption is key for most clock designs.
Maxim's newest low-power RTC ICs contain automatic gain control (AGC) circuitry, which serves to reduce power use even further. Additionally, this circuitry supports oscillator crystals with high equivalent series resistance (ESR). These smaller, high ESR crystals reduce board space requirements. As a result, Maxim's RTCs can help reduce the power and space needs in your designs.
