Applications


Fluid Flow Monitoring

Fluid monitoring in medical applications is usually performed using two or more pressure sensor transducers and then monitoring and comparing the measured pressures to determine if there is fluid flow through a tube. In medical applications specialized transducers called “occlusion sensors” are used to detect minute changes in pressure within medical tubing.

Pump and Motor Control and Monitoring

Many medical applications require precise control of electric motors used to pump fluids.  Peristaltic and syringe pump mechanisms are used for the critical blood circuit and therapy injection applications.  These pumps are usually driven by stepper motors or BLDC motors under system control. 

A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device uses an electric blower that spins at about 30krpm to develop a positive pressure.  The motor must change speeds rapidly so the windings must be monitored to prevent overheating.

Pressure and Temperature Sensing

Most diagnostic and therapy medical equipment requires the ability to sense pressure and temperature.  The pressure and temperature ranges to be measured are usually narrow compared to industrial applications, so signal chains that employ 10 to 12 bit data converters are usually sufficient.  However, accuracy remains very important in these applications.
