Improving the Cost of Solar Energy: Part 2, Financial Benefits of Cell-String Optimization

Abstract: This article is the second in a two-part series about new technical advances that reduce the cost of solar energy. The series examines the technology and benefits of emerging cell-level optimization electronics being integrated into photovoltaic (PV) modules. The first article examined the product advancement and effects of this integrated circuit (IC) based approach on PV system design, module performance, and reliability. This second article presents the financial benefits of incorporating sub-module cell-string optimization into a large-scale PV project. A case study details the design process with standard modeling tools.
