Differences Between DS2431 and DS28E07

Our portfolio of 1-Wire 1Kb EEPROM chips include the DS2431 and DS28E07. Both devices are very similar in terms of functionality and have four memory pages of 256 bits each. They implement the same commands and memory structure.

However, there are eight parametric differences between the DS2431 and DS28E07 as seen in the table below. (Table 1)

Let's get into these differences in more detail.

  • 1-Wire Pullup Voltage (VPUP)
    • The DS28E07's minimum voltage is 0.2V higher than the DS2431, which could impact applications where the operating voltage is below 3V.
  • Write-Zero Low Time (tW0L)
    • The DS2431's minimum time is 52.1µs, while the DS28E07's is 60µs. Legacy adapters such as DS9097U and DS9490 are not compatible with the DS28E07.
  • Recovery Time (tREC)
    • The DS28E07's minimum recovery time in overdrive speed is 1us longer than the DS2431. The application's timing configurations may require changes when using overdrive speed.
  • Programming Current (IPROG)
    • The DS28E07's higher programming current may require a stiffer 1-Wire pullup resistor or the use of a strong pullup.
  • Programming Time (tPROG)
    • The DS28E07's slightly longer programming time of 12ms may require a firmware update to meet this requirement.
  • Write/Erase Cycles (NCY)
    • The minimum write/erase cycles for the DS2431 at 25C is 200,000 cycles, and at 85C is 50,000 cycles, meanwhile for the DS28E07 for both 25C and 85C is 10,000 cycles. This could have an impact in your application if you require more than 10,000 write/erase cycles.
  • Data Retention (tDR)
    • The data retention for the DS28E07 is significantly lower than the DS2431. This could have an impact in your application if the memory retention requirements are insufficient.
  • Package
    • The DS2431 comes in packages TO-92, TSOC, 2SFN, TDFN-EP, and UCSPR, while the DS28E07 only comes in packages TO-92, TSOC, and TDFN-EP. This could have an impact if your application requires a package not available in DS28E07.

In conclusion, if your application allows it, you can easily switch between the DS2431 and DS28E07.
