Note to Editor:
  • The DS4412 is a dual-channel, sink/source current DAC.
  • This device provides a low-cost method of controlling power-supply voltages with minimal power-supply redesign.
  • To minimize the need for power-supply redesign, the DS4412 uses a current change at the feedback node to manipulate the power-supply output voltage.
  • The DS4412 is ideal for DC-DC power-supply applications-such as servers and video-processing cards-that require margin testing or dynamic voltage control.

SUNNYVALE, CA—February 20, 2008—Maxim Integrated (Pink Sheets: MXIM) introduces the DS4412 low-cost, dual-channel, sink/source current DAC. This I²C-controlled, 4-bit current DAC features two output channels that are explicitly designed for power-supply margin testing and adjustment. Each output channel provides control of a DC-DC power supply by sinking or sourcing current directly into the power supply's feedback node. This DC-DC power-supply control allows existing power-supply designs to be margined and adjusted with minimal redesign, thus making the DS4412 ideal for servers, video-processing cards, and other DC-DC power-supply applications.

The DS4412 powers up in a neutral (or zero-current) output condition to minimize system-startup overhead requirements. To maximize simplicity and versatility, the full-scale output currents are set between 500µA and 2mA using one external resistor for each channel. Through the I²C bus, the output currents can then be set to any of the 15 linear sink or 15 linear source steps up to the maximum full-scale value.

The DS4412 is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range, and is available in a tiny 8-pin µSOP. Pricing begins at $0.45 (10,000-up, FOB USA).

Maxim Integrated, a two billion dollar company, designs and manufactures ICs for analog and mixed-signal applications. The company's broad portfolio of 27 product categories is among the industry's deepest, with over 5400 products.
